The Uplifting Power of Yoga: Asanas for Depression & Grief – Backbends & Inversions,
Aug 10, 2010 - Aug 13, 2010
7:30AM - 9:30AM

This series of classes will study a particular sequence of poses that BKS Iyengar designed for people suffering from deep depression. It starts with supported backbends that people can do successfully even when their energy is so low they feel they cannot move. Gradually it proceeds into active and invigorating poses that "make the brain light." Studying the sequence four days in a row allows us to refine our experience of the poses so their uplifting powers can permeate more deeply inside us. These classes are recommended for students with at least one year of yoga. They are particularly beneficial for those with depression or in a time of grief but are also open to others who would like to experience more freedom in backbends and life in general.

Oct 23, 2010
5:00PM - 10:00PM

Join the trio of world-famous kirtan / yoga chant artists for the first time together on stage for 6 hours in Somerville, MA.

David Newman's music embodies a devotional mysticism, distinctive musicality, poetic intimacy and a deep respect for India's ancient chant traditions. He just released a new CD titled 'To Be Home".

Donna de Lory is a devoted student of yoga and spiritual teachings, she is inspired not only by Western pop, but by Indian devotional music, Sanskrit mantras, Northern African grooves, psychedelic arrangements, and dance beats. The Topanga Canyon-based singer enjoys making what she calls “meditative music” that can smartly – and sensuously - lend itself to dance-friendly, earthy remixes; richly textured music that can heal through either contemplation or celebration.

Girish is an eclectic artist with roots in jazz, world, and sacred music. His musical talents find expression in a wide array of instruments – including tablas, world percussion, guitar, harmonium, and voice.

Kundalini Yoga and Gong Meditation

“The gong is the sound of Creativity itself. Out of it came all music, all sounds, and all words.” Yogi Bhajan

Preparing ourselves through Kundalini Yoga, the body becomes open and receptive to change and healing. While in this state, the sound waves of the gong induce an extended state of effortless meditation and relaxation facilitating the movement of prana throughout the body and psyche. Gong meditation releases blocks, stimulates circulation and the glandular system to a higher level of functioning. The result is a reorganization of the emotional energy and feelings that are tied into the body structure. In this way, the gong is a tool that magnifies and focuses the power of the yoga experience as every cell and fiber of your body is penetrated. Feel yourself ride the sound into the Infinite itself.

Teacher's Study Project with Coeli Marsh
Apr 01, 2011 - Jun 30, 2011

Date Fridays, April 1st - June 30th
Time 9:30–1:30pm
Fee $35/session
Registration required

Workshop Description
The Teacher's Study Project is a powerful resource for yoga teachers. Under the direction of Coeli Marsh, the Project has successfully mentored yoga teachers in all stages of development, from professional to those just taking their first steps.

This is not a certification program; rather it is a mentoring program, an exploration of being grounded and awake in the classroom so that we may better serve our students. As yoga teachers, clear and compassionate communication is our greatest vehicle for sharing. This method of teacher training addresses the common mistakes and blind spots that often become habit over time. We will explore this work together through discussion, practice, and group and individual mentoring.

The curriculum covers:

Teaching technique: The method of serving all, how to see the students in the room and teach them where they are, how to teach all levels, beginners and more experienced students alike.
Essential language: Choosing words that are useful to our students, voice projection and range, and eliminating repetition and excess in communication.
Hands on adjustments, functional anatomy, asana alignment and modifications, and evaluating and preventing injuries.
This program is appropriate for experienced or new teachers or those considering teaching. A yoga class will be taught by the participants of this course and offered to the public once the training is underway.

The Power of Touch with Nicole Clark
Sep 18, 2011
2:00PM - 5:00PM

Lay your hands on someone.

The application of careful touch can refine your yoga practice and elevate yoga instruction to otherwise unattainable heights. Join Nicole Clark for this 3 Hour workshop for teachers, bodyworkers and students, emphasizing hands-on adjustments and other uses of touch in the yoga studio. (Re)discover the power of touch to comfort and heal, connect and communicate. Learn to develop and trust your intuition and your insight. Gain a deeper understanding of anatomy and energy in the ebb and flow of yoga practice.
About Nicole Clark

Nicole Clark is a Forrest Yoga trained instructor with over seven years of experience. Immediately after completing instructor training at the Forrest Yoga Circle/Institute in 2002, Nicole began teaching at the studio. In 2007, Nicole brought her passion for Forrest Yoga to Yummy Yoga in Los Angeles, California when she joined their staff. In addition to teaching at Yummy Yoga, Nicole has also worked with private clients throughout Southern California. Since her move to Boston, MA in January of 2010, Nicole continues to teach studio classes at the Back Bay Yoga Studio in Boston as well as private clientele. Nicole’s classes embody the principles of Forrest Yoga (breath, strength, integrity and spirit) by focusing on strengthening the core, and working with the breath while maintaining a mind body connection throughout practice. Nicole is known for her core work, and deep understanding of the positive effect a strong core has on the rest of the body.
Nicole Clark

Nicole’s expertise extends far beyond her Forrest Yoga experience. Nicole has also trained and worked extensively with Hugh and Giorgia Milne at the Milne Institute where she studied and put into practice the institute’s visionary approach to Craniosacral Work. Craniosacral is a gentle, hands-on therapy that uses the method of the healing touch to re-align the body and center the mind. Nicole combines the craniosacral touch with massage techniques and a vast understanding of anatomy to treat her clients. Nicole continues her in depth studies with the Milne Institute by working with both Hugh and Giorgia Milne on assisting with beginning and intermediate craniosacral and craniosacral anatomy trainings throughout California.

The combination of yoga, Craniosacral Bodywork, and a natural ability to sense the depth and root of each individual client’s particular needs enables Nicole to work with diverse clientele. Nicole treats a variety of clients including (but not limited to) cancer patients, stroke victims, those suffering from heart disease, addiction, endometriosis, sciatica, back pain and shoulder injuries. Whether a client is recovering from a terminal illness, a C-section, a car accident or simply a pulled muscle, Nicole’s intuitive, soothing and caring work plays an integral part in the healing process. As an experienced yogi and practitioner of Craniosacral Bodywork, Nicole understands that healing the body is only part of the process. Often, our hearts and minds need just as much healing as our bodies throughout the road to recovery. Through Nicole’s intensive, yet compassionate, sessions, she is able to identify emotional triggers for physical pain. By recognizing the source of pain, Nicole is able to help clients heal both internally and externally, allowing them to move on to the next stage in their lives with a new awareness of their bodies and sense of self.

The Yoga of 12 Step Recovery
Sep 23, 2011 - Sep 23, 2011
6::30PM - 9::30PM

Addictive behaviors separate and disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, our environment and so much more. Conversely, yoga itself means union, integration and balance. The intention of this workshop is to create a sacred space upon which we will discuss addiction, its characteristics, the 12 steps and principles, the history of yoga and the 8 limbs, the similarities between the two philosophies and take a journey through the stages of recovery using a blend of the tools of each philosophy to bring us into wholeness.

This is a rich and powerful framework designed to inspire compassionate awareness, change and healing.

This practice is open to anyone and everyone dealing with their own addictive behavior or affected by the addictive behaviors of others. Bring the body, the mind and Spirit will follow.

The Yoga of 12 Step Recovery is in no way a replacement for 12-step meetings, a sponsor or any other part of a 12-step recovery program. It is an adjunct providing what we believe is another helpful tool in addressing the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction.

The Martha’s Vineyard Yoga Festival, October 7-10th
The Beach Plum Inn is proud to be home to the Martha’s Vineyard Yoga Festival! From acupuncturists to naturopathic doctors, the island has some of the most knowledgeable and gifted practitioners we have found anywhere. This year we will offer massage (day and night), community acupuncture sessions, and free “brown bag” lunches with local alternative health practitioners who will share their work and answer questions. And we are thrilled to be hosting a raw food evening with Jill Pettijohn (www.jillpettijohn.com) on Saturday night at the Beach Plum Inn.
There will also be led morning beach meditations, an evening kirtan workshop, fresh air, shopping (a trunk show with Hyde Yoga clothing and Yoga Mat Boutique), time for walking down a country road or on a beach. Their vibrations reinforce the body's natural energy & gently lift our energy field’s frequency to a higher vibration. It has the power to bring a positive shift in consciousness.

While it unwinds the mind and calms the nervous system, it helps bring better focus and a feeling of tranquility & peace. This is a healing modality as well as a meditation!

Dec 09, 2012
1:30 PM - 4:00 PM

This class will be held at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel
50 Park Plaza at Arlington Street, Boston, MA
In this Forrest Yoga session you learn to create freedom and strength in hip, neck and shoulders. You will learn to safely unlock these habitual tension spots through intensely focused breathwork and asana (including inversions, standing poses and vinyasa). Strengthen and lengthen the muscles around these joints and create space in these areas. This work helps you walk through your life with grace and freedom.

About Ana Forrest

Ana Forrest has been changing people's lives for nearly 40 years. An internationally recognized pioneer in yoga and emotional healing, Ana created Forrest Yoga while working through her own healing from her life's trauma and experience. With thousands of licensed practitioners around the world, Forrest Yoga is renowned as an intensely physical, internally focused practice that emphasizes how to carry a transformative experience off the mat and into daily life.
By teaching asana, breath and an awareness of the movement of energy through the body, Ana teaches yoga from an intuitive and highly developed understanding of the human body and psyche. With her meticulous guidance, Ana's students cultivate an acute awareness of their own practice and life process, resulting in an exhilarating journey into self-‐discovery, cleansing and healing. For Ana, this is her intent. "In teaching Forrest Yoga, I am doing my part to mend the hoop of the people -‐ to inspire people to clear through the stuff that hardens them and sickens their bodies so they can walk freely and lightly in a healing way, in a Beauty Way."
Ana took her first yoga class at age 14 on a dare and became a certified instructor at age 18. Her extensive study and clinical application of healing modalities, including homeopathic and naturopathic remedies, anatomy, reflexology, pressure point therapy, craniosacral therapies, Shiatsu, chiropractic, polarity and hands on healing, always informs her work. In her life-‐long pursuit of becoming a better teacher and healer, Ana has undertaken intimate studies in Sweat Lodge, Pipe Ceremony, Vision Quest and Sundance with various Native American and African healers.
Ana is an ordained practitioner of Native American Medicine, a Reiki Master, a Certified Regression Therapist, and a graduate of Anthony Robbins Master University. She is a Faculty Member at The University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic and sits on the Boards of F.A.R.E. Play (Foundation for Athletic Research and Education) and Earth & Sky Circle (organization for Native American Ceremony). She is the recipient of a Los Angeles Mayoral Commendation recognizing her outstanding teaching and healing work in the community, the first time a major U.S. city bestowed such an honor on a yogi or yogini. Ana is a regular contributor to Yoga Journal and a consultant to the USAF 48th Fighter Wing (RAF Lakenheath, UK), Exalted Warrior Foundation (Tampa, FL) and hiwecanhelp.org (Newcastle, UK).
Ana has generated extensive worldwide media coverage. She continues to teach throughout the year around the world. Her book, Fierce Medicine: Breakthrough Practices to Heal the Body and Ignite the Spirit, (HarperOne) was released May 2011.

SHADOW YOGA & LONGEVITY QIGONG: A WEEKEND WITH MATT PESENDIAN
Mar 23, 2013
10:00am - 12:30pm

Shadow Yoga, founded by Zhander Remete, is a Hatha Yoga system that utilizes rhythmic breathing, bandhas (energetic locks) and the system of marma (vital junctions) to free the peripheral body of its energetic obstructions and to ignite our inner fire for healing and meditation. Shadow Yoga consists of circular and spiraling movements, warrior stances, and sun salutation forms that prepares students to safely and effectively practice the more advanced limbs of Hatha Yoga.

This weekend workshop will focus on the Shadow Yoga prelude, Chaya Yoddha Sanchalanam (Churning of the Shadow Warrior), along with basic yogic principles and postures which stand at the heart of this unique Hatha Yoga practice.

The term "churning" implies that something within is being stirred up or moved. This warrior/sun form activates and harnesses the pranic winds (vayus) which flow through the various energetic channels (nadis). Uddiyana bandha (navel lock) will also be introduced to train the breath, clear physical/energetic blockages, tonify the organic body and stimulate the inner fire.

MATT PESENDIAN
Matt Pesendian has been practicing and studying the art of Hatha Yoga since 1989 and Qigong since 1998. He received a B.A. degree at U.C. Santa Cruz and a Master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine at Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine. Matt has taught Longevity Qigong at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara since 2005 and recently released his first Longevity Qigong DVD.

Didgeridoo Chakra Intensive: Chakras 4 & 5 with Joseph Carringer
Mar 24, 2013
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Begin or continue your chakra clearing and meditation with this workshop!
The body is divided into three energy centers called Dantians versus the seven energy centers of the ayurvedic chakra system. When compared there are similarities between the two models regarding the emotional components of the centers and their impact on physical health. The chakra/dantian intensives use the TCM dantian model to effectively group the centers for a focused intensive workshop. Program Description ~ A Note from the Teacher

Using children's unfiltered imagination and their spectrum of energies as my guide, I lead classes to help students celebrate their best selves in a safe and playful environment. Each session encourages self study, mindful breathing, body awareness and group interaction, cultivating the foundation that we all aspire to create -- a life in which we happily move about with ease, promoting peace and kindness. It is powerful to see students employ the techniques we practice in yoga class to find calm and balance off the mat. Their 'yoga toolbox' will serve them throughout their lives.

Final relaxation (Savasana) is the loveliest part of each practice. I cherish the chance to personally connect with each student and the children look forward to that peaceful ritual. Witnessing the end of class always inspires me.

A WEEKEND INTENSIVE ON APPLYING FOCUS TO ASANA: Bandhas and Inner Limbs of Yoga w/ Jessica Kung and

A WEEKEND INTENSIVE ON APPLYING FOCUS TO ASANA: Bandhas and Inner Limbs of Yoga w/ Jessica Kung and
May 18, 2013
1:00PM - 3:30PM

We have all heard the word "mulabandha" tossed around, but what does it refer to? We have heard it referred to as the key to yoga practice and yet in the context of a regular vinyasa class there is never the time to delve deeply into what bandhas are and what they can do to transform your practice.
This is an all levels workshop open to all practitioners of all different styles of Yoga, except new beginners.
Jessica and Stéphane are a joyful team. They bring an exuberance and depth to their asana teaching that comes predominantly from a deep study of the Jivamukti Yoga method and the Tibetan Heart Yoga lineage. They are also highly influenced by Sri Dharma Mittra, AcroYoga, Iyengar, and Ashtanga. They are both certified Jivamukti Yoga teachers and Tibetan Heart Yoga teachers. They have traveled around the world facilitating workshops, teacher trainings, and retreats. They recently completed a 450 day silent meditation retreat. Jessica is the founder of Yogis at Yale. (YAY) For more info visit www.triveniyoga.com

The Root of the Practice: Finding Mulabandha. Saturday 1-3:30pm, $45
We will start with the definition of Bandhas, and specifically the definition of Mulabandha. We will then explore asanas and sequences that will allow us to start to feel and apply this lock to our practice.

Flying Up: Learning to Engage Uddiyana Bandha. Sunday 10:30am-12:30pm, $40
Do not eat a big breakfast before this class! We will be practicing kriyas, and learning how to properly engage Uddiyana Bandha. Then we will take it into arm balances, inversions, and other asana opportunities.

Catching the Cloud: Reaching Jalandhara. Sunday 1:30-3:30pm, $40
We will review all three bandhas and experience how asanas can become mudras, or complete energy circuits. The work will lead into shoulderstand and mahamudra.

Women's Practice with Alexandra Moreano

Women's Practice with Alexandra Moreano
Jul 14, 2013
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Ashtanga yoga is meant to be practiced 6 days a week for many years, hopefully for life. Additionally we rest on the days of full and new moon , and for women the first days (2-3) of their menstrual cycle. Guruji always taught women to take the first three days of your menstrual cycle as days of rest as a "ladies holiday" from Ashtanga Yoga practice. During that time the downward flow of energy, or apana is strong and shouldn't be disturbed. This days of rest are as important as the days of practice and make this method a long healthy sustainable practice for women.

This is a class specifically designed for these days. Based on a therapeutic approach we will go through a number of restorative , supported poses that are beneficial for women during these day . They are meant to make you rest and replenish, not work. We will use bolsters and blankets .

Sunday July 14th, 8:30-10:00am

$25
(Open to all female practitioners. No Ashtanga experience necessary).

Yoga for Arthritis Workshop
Dec 08, 2013
2:00pm - 4:00pm

Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in America. This two hour workshop will talk about how yoga can provide gentle and safe movement for all your joints with gradual progression. Ritu Kapur, OT, CYT will teach poses for strength, balance and flexibility with individualized modifications. She will be using chairs, blanket and bolsters as props to support the body and to make the poses comfortable for you.

Deep breathing done with poses allows increased relaxation and mindfulness which can help with pain management associated with Arthritis. Neil Pearon, a PT, Yoga therapist and a clinical assistant professor at the UBC says, “Yoga provides a path toward calming your body-mind-spirit. Through yoga we can create positive neuroplastic change, leading to less pain, better movement, and improved quality of life in the face of chronic pain.” Steffany Moonaz, Yoga therapist and a researcher at John Hopkins Arthritis Center says, “Yoga can play an important role in reducing stress and frustration that results from pain and disability, and increasing positive feelings and wellbeing.” Visit her website http://yoga4arthritis.com for details on how yoga can help you cope with arthritis.

G Flow w/Goldie Kaufenberg
Jan 25, 2014
2:00pm - 4:00pm

In this two-hour workshop, Goldie will lead you through a dynamic vinyasa sequence working towards a peak pose, beginning with pranayama (breath) and gentle asana (postures) to slowly open and awaken the body in preparation for a stronger flow, integrating the body as a whole. Combining breath with movement, intelligent sequencing and anatomy knowledge, the creative possibilities are endless.
Each posture will be presented with modifications for both the beginner and advanced student, inviting every yogic body. Together, we will refine our practice and move beyond the limitations our minds set for us.
This workshop is open to all, regardless of practitioner level.

Bio: An athlete most of her life, Goldie has always found herself through forms of expressive body movement. After a severe rock-climbing accident, and a few marathons’ worth of wear, Goldie accepted her sister’s invitation to a yoga class. Little did Goldie know it would be the first step of a most wondrous personal adventure! One week after moving to San Francisco to further her career in medicine, Goldie found herself in what she likes to call her first “spiritual epiphany.” Child’s pose and Les Leventhal’s teachings were all it took to divert Goldie from the path she thought, to the path she felt. Goldie received her 200hr certification in 2008 from Yoga Tree San Francisco, and credits her teaching inspiration to the influences of Les Leventhal, Janet Stone, Stephanie Snyder, Nikki Vilella, and David Regelin. Goldie’s vinyasa classes are known to be challenging but playful. She strives to inspire her students to know themselves better by moving past their comfort zone, in order to move ever more gracefully when walking off their mat and into this beautiful, crazy world. Cultivating a strong and flexible physical and mental foundation, with a combination of vinyasa flow, fresh beats and lots of heart, her classes will allow you to show up not only for your own well-being, but for those around you. Goldie’s class will give you the opportunity to stretch the barriers of
what you thought possible. Goldie was recently named “Best Yoga Instructor” in the 2012 Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston awards. She leads workshops throughout the country, and retreats around the world.

Prajna Yoga: The Subtle Body with Tias Little
May 19, 2014 - May 22, 2014
9:00AM - 5:00PM

Full Day or Morning Session Available

The Subtle Body course is an in-depth study of the neck and the cranium along with the throat chakra and the chakras inside the skull. We review the bones of the cranium, cranial sutures, jaw and sensory organs. We detail the practice of jalandhara bandha and its effect on the throat chakra, and thyroid gland. We study pratyahara (the softening of sensory awareness), particularly in relation to the eyes, ears, mouth, and throat. We emphasize the importance of the organ of the tongue and introduce khechari mudra to release the upper palate and throat. We practice mobilization techniques to release strain in the neck and shoulder region. The asana Practices emphasize the study of inversions including headstand, shoulder stand and plough. One of the primary themes of The Subtle Body is the emotional body. Stemming from our anatomical study of the throat, skull, and brain, we study the central nervous system with its sympathetic and parasympathetic branches and the fight or flight response. We investigate the impact that trauma has on both mind and body, and we look at how anxiety and stress become embedded in the body's soft tissues. In light of the effects that stress and trauma have on the body, we study the kleshas or afflictions from both the Patanjali Yoga Sutras and the Buddhist teaching. We compare the kleshas as enumerated in the ancient yoga texts to current theories of stress and emotional holding given Western psychology and somatic practices.

Workshop with Edwin Bryant: The Bhagavad Gita, with an Emphasis on Hindu and Samkhya Philosophy
Oct 18, 2014 - Oct 19, 2014

We're thrilled to have Edwin Bryant back with us this year in our communty of yogis and scholars! The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most representative and certainly the most influential and popular text from the numerous and varied spiritual traditions of Hindu India. Much of its philosophical underpinnings also speaks to the Samkhya Yoga philosophy so essential to the world of yoga therapy, as well as the quest for emotional balance.

Spoken by Lord Krishna to Arjuna who is undergoing a moment of crisis, the text deals with the nature of the self, the world, ultimate reality, the purpose of human existence, and the spiritual paths that can be undertaken to accomplish this purpose. There are primarily four such paths, or yoga systems, featured in the text through which one can unite with the Divine: the path of self-knowledge, jnana yoga; the path of action in the world, karma yoga; the path of meditation, raja yoga; and the path of theistic devotion, bhakti yoga. This workshop will undertake a detailed discussion of these four yoga systems, with contextual references to the background of the text and to some of the major streams of Hindu philosophy and thought. No prior knowledge of Hinduism is necessary for this seminar; the only requirement is to bring an open mind and sincere heart. Students are encouraged to procure any edition of the text, particularly versions that have the Sanskrit text in Roman script (such as the Sargeant version), since we will chant some of the Sanskrit verses together.

Asana Lab VI: Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Pigeon) with Ryan Cunningham
Nov 18, 2014
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In the course of 90 minute class we so rarely get the opportunity to break-down from the inside out. This series is meant to do just that! Each workshop will be spent deconstructing a particular pose. By the end students will understand more fully the pose’s benefits, anatomy, biomechanics, and common misalignments. We will also focus on helpful ways to prepare for the pose and modify the pose for injuries.

Asana Lab is a seven part series geared towards students with some yoga experience and are looking to take a close look at the postures of modern yoga. It is also ideal for teachers looking to enhance their knowledge of how to teach each of these poses. Each lab will entail asana practice and discussion in a small group setting (each class limited to 12 students).

Pigeon pose, in all forms, is ubiquitous in modern yoga class. This lab will consist of a slow-flow practice in which we will discuss the anatomy, function and benefits of both the forward pending and backward bending expressions of eka pada rajakapotasana.

Healthy Shoulders and Upper Back: An Iyengar Yoga Workshop
Feb 21, 2015 - Feb 21, 2015
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

During the Winter months we tend to brace ourselves, hunch over for warmth or to nurse overworked shoulders after shoveling through the snow storms. We carry the visible and invisible on our shoulders. While the tangible can be taken off, the invisible weighs heavy on our shoulder girdle creeping up the neck and down the back.Tension in this region is also related to poor posture, being hunched over our computers or stress of life events. Yoga can bring relief by bringing balance in the body as well as in the body-mind spectrum to counter the wear and tear.

The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint, its shallowness adds to the flexibility of the joint but it also puts the shoulder at risk. The rotation of the big ball (head of the humerus or upper arm bone) on the little base (where it meets the scapula) makes the shoulder mobile. In addition freedom in the shoulder girdle leads to opening of the chest for better breathing, more energy and circulation.

Iyengar yoga is known for its emphasis on precise alignment and therapeutic benefits. This workshop will focus on our shoulder girdle and a healthy alignment for strength and mobility through various asanas. You will learn asanas that would create freedom and space for access to movement and release of stiffness.

Where: Brookline Iyengar Yoga Studio
Date: February 21, 2015 (Saturday)
Time: Asana 9:30 AM-12:30 PM
Light Ayurvedic Meal 12:30-1:30 PM
Fee: $50:00

About Caitlyn Graham Visconte
Caitlyn Graham Visconte
Caitlyn believes yoga is an opportunity to deepen the most important relationship we have in this lifetime, the one with ourselves. It encourages students to take a closer look at their bodies, minds and hearts, and when we allow it to will create a harmony between all three. Caitlyn's goal as a yoga teacher is to encourage people to trust in their inner strength and to help students create a sustainable yoga practice. Her class themes vary weekly but the style is always a fluid and dynamic flow with an offering of arm balances and inversions. Caitlyn empowers students to make intelligent decisions on the mat. Our bodies and our needs change daily and it is her hope that you honor that by adding in what nourishes you and taking out what doesn't.

Caitlyn discovered yoga in 2005 and immediately felt at home on the mat and in her body. In 2009 she completed YogaWorks 200 hr training program and began teaching full time shortly after. She continues to develop her personal practice and teaching with advanced yoga studies through Back Bay Yoga. Caitlyn is also honored to be a part of the Back Bay Yoga Teacher Training staff where she can share the information and love she has gathered over the years with the Boston yoga community.

Functional Anatomy with Susi Hately
Friday, June 12 – Sunday, June 14, 2015
A New Way of Asana: Think Smarter, See Better.
Friday, June 12, 6:00pm-8:30pm
As yoga evolves to encompass more anatomy, there seems to also be a growing focus on "what poses are unsafe". The poses are merely movements, and if we can learn to move better many of the poses will actually become available to us. Likewise, as teachers, if we can learn to see better, we'll notice where students compensate and more accurately cue them so they can improve movement, reduce pain and deepen their practice.

Introduction to Yoga Therapy: Helping people reduce or get out of pain.
Saturday and Sunday 9:30am-12:30pm and 2:00pm-5:00pm
Yoga Therapy, as a technique, combines the art of traditional yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditation with the modern scientific understanding of kinesiology, anatomy and physiology. It is a balanced and mindful approach to health and healing which enables you to develop body and mind awareness and a sense of ease. This workshop provides an introduction to the concepts and benefits of Yoga Therapy that are easy to apply to yourself or with your students. Bringing a grounded, anatomical and physiological approach to understanding pain, injury and healing - you will learn not only the “what” of how you can help yourself or your students, you will also learn the “why”. An example of the topics we will explore will be shoulder injuries and sciatica. This workshop is ideal if: • You want to assist yourself or others relax and develop self-awareness. • You want to help others or yourself become more mobile, flexible, stable and strong. • You are a yoga teacher who feels emptiness when you give the standard reply of “listen to your body” to people with pain or injury (or another condition beyond your scope). • You are a yoga teacher and your desire to help others is propelling you to want to learn more.
Friday, June 12 – Sunday, June 14, 2015 Full weekend $260 ($275 after June 1st) Saturday morning $60 ($65 after June 1st) Saturday Full Day, $120 ($130 after June 1st) Saturday and Sunday $210 ( $225 after June 1st)

Yoga Masters Immersion with Raghunath

Yoga Masters Immersion with Raghunath
Jul 27, 2015 - Aug 31, 2015
See Description for detail - See Description for detail

In this 25 hour study Raghunath will teach you how to upgrade your asana practice for whatever level you’re at introducing you to or refining your inversions, arm balances, advanced transitions and meditational practice. Raghu will also lead a deep but practical overview of three of the ancient books on yogic history: the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the Yoga Sutras. These three make up the fabric of yogic thought and practice and are instrumental for the serious student to not just study, but learn how to practically apply in our contemporary life. Raghunath sheds light on this sacred literature and deftly explains the balancing act between our earthly and spirit selves. More than having a great yoga practice Raghu teaches how to become a yogi.

About Raghunath
Raghunath
Ex-punk, ex-monk, husband, father of four, inversion ambassador, bent on Bhakti, detox junkie, evolution assistant, coalesced by kirtan, cacao consumer, puranic story teller, reciter of Gita, potential excavation, fixed on elevation, take a deep breath. beyond birth and death. Prana hunter, animal friendly, transcendence in training, born to give, live today, full contact fighter, devours durians, likes to chant, likes a challenge, servant of the servants, harmonium hugger, conscious of Krishna.

Raghunath was a Lower east side hardcore/punk singer songwriter icon, touring the globe in his teens. In a decadent music scene infested with hard drugs, negativity & intoxication he was an anomaly and a light propounding clean living, positive attitude and vegetarian lifestyle, inspiring tens of thousands of fans internationally. Since his youth he was fascinated with eastern thought and took his inspiration from Emerson, Ghandi, Thoreau, The Bhuddhist Sutras, The Bible and the Bhagavad Gita. He started practicing yoga in NYC in 1987 with the esteemed Sri Dharma Mitra as well as Shivananada Yoga. The pettiness of the business of music and the untimely death of his father led him to India in 1988 where he dove deeper into the the lifestyle and spirituality of India. He became a celibate monk at a Krishna Bhakti Ashram for 6 years where he intensely studied, meditated and lived the ancient yogic texts. In 1991 in the sacred village of Vrindavan he was awarded the name Raghunath and two years later in that same holy town awarded diksha or the sacred thread, for his study. Now, 23 years later, he's an accomplished yogi in many styles, married with four children he leads retreats, workshops and and yoga teacher trainings especially in Los Angeles and New York City. He is an expert at taking the esoteric yoga philosophy and making it understandable and practical for the contemporary world. He is an inspirational force in the community by living yoga and taking the esoterica of yoga philosophy and making it practical and understandable in contemporary life.

Prajna Yoga Intensive with Tias Little

Prajna Yoga Intensive with Tias Little
Aug 14, 2015 - Aug 14, 2015
9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Morning Session:
Joint Mobilization in Yoga
The aim of a vital yoga practice is to keep the health of the joints. Due to stress, repetitive strain or trauma, the joints may compress and tighten. In this class we alternately stretch and relax the joints so that the nerve tracts (nadis), can pass freely through the joints. It is said that there are 350,000 nadis (arteries, veins, lymph and nerve channels) in the body. So when the joint spaces are supple, overall circulation and neurological flow is improved. This class includes floor movements and seated positions to release the knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, wrists and spine.

Afternoon Session:
Centering In: The Power of the Lower Belly
In yoga, qigong and the martial arts, the lower abdomen is the seat of power and wisdom. It is thought to be like a reservoir of chi or prana for the entire body. Unfortunately, for many people, the area around the navel is blocked, congested or stagnate. In this class Tias guides students to access their lower belly, the storehouse for all vitality in the body.

About Tias Little
Tias Little
Tias’s unique and skillful approach enables students to find greater depth of understanding and awareness in their practice, both on and off the mat. His approach to the practice is inter-disciplinary, passionate, intelligent, innovative and full of insight. Tias synthesizes years of study in classical yoga, Sanskrit, Buddhist studies, anatomy, massage and trauma healing. Tias began studying the work of B.K.S Iyengar in 1984 and lived in Mysore, India in 1989 studying Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with Pattabhi Jois. Thus his teaching brings together precision of alignment, anatomical detail and a profound meditative experience.

Tias is a licensed massage therapist and his somatic studies include in-depth training in cranial-sacral therapy. His practice and teaching is influenced by the work of Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais and Thomas Hanna. Tias is a long time student of the meditative arts and Buddhist studies beginning with Vipassana and continuing in Tibetan Buddhism and Zen. His teaching style is unique in being able to weave together poetic metaphor with clear instruction filled with compassion and humor. Tias earned a Master’s degree in Eastern Philosophy from St. John’s College Santa Fe in 1998.

Tias is the author of three books, The Thread of Breath, Meditations on a Dewdrop and forthcoming Yoga of the Subtle Body.

Journey to Hanuman with Jessica Emilfarb

Journey to Hanuman with Jessica Emilfarb
Oct 17, 2015 - Oct 17, 2015
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

The pose was born of from Hanuman's great leap across the ocean to Sri Lanka. It requires bravery and incredible openness through the hamstrings. It is a deeply freeing shape, and also incredibly and surprisingly accessible. When approached with presence of mind, you can ease into a more graceful and integrated split. We'll use a heated vinyasa flow to access the belly of the hamstrings, using props and creative variations to explore increased mobility. This workshop is also about softening into more profound shapes with compassion and not force. The body opens with nurture not frustration. Suitable for all levels, bring a towel!

Oct 18, 2015 - Oct 18, 2015
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM

These workshops are intended for anyone needing to chill out and rest their body, mind and spirit. When doing asana for restoration we look for a quality of non-action, or rest, in the poses. We use props to support and assist relaxation. This practice can alleviate fatigue and insomnia. It is integrating and harmonizing giving you a chance to catch up with yourself. Open to absolute beginners as well as advanced practitioners, people with injuries and other precautions often find the practice healing. Relaxation has stages, it is something one can develop. $35/per workshop. Pre-registration required.

Experiential Anatomy with Judith Hanson Lasater

Experiential Anatomy with Judith Hanson Lasater
Oct 19, 2015 - Oct 23, 2015
11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Deeply understanding the anatomy and movement principles of the body is an invaluable tool for yoga teachers and serious students. Not only does it help your teaching, it also enriches your own practice.

In this workshop we will practice Active and Quiet poses. But our work will be focused around learning specific anatomy by first feeling it in our bodies and seeing it in other bodies. Often participants in this workshop realize they already know a lot about anatomy because they feel it bodily rather than have the ability to verbalize it. The important next step is that we we will uncover together he movement principles (kinesiology) and be able to name the anatomical parts that are moving. It really doesn't help, for example, to know where the biceps muscle is if you don't understand how it works in various ways and with various other muscles. Our practice is about the moving, NOT static body.

Not only will we stretch the hamstrings, for example, but we will also learn exactly where they attach and what exactly it is they do in the body besides make forward bends challenging.

The required text will be Judith’s book, Yogabody: Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Asana, which will be available for sale at the workshop.

(It is highly recommended that registrants review/study Chapter 1 of Yogabody before the workshop begins.)

Root and Release: Slow Transitions to Increase Strength with Caitlyn Graham Visconte

Root and Release: Slow Transitions to Increase Strength with Caitlyn Graham Visconte
Dec 12, 2015 - Dec 12, 2015
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Feel your feet, get low, build heat and get stronger, faster by slowing down your pace and finding grace. We get stronger when we hold poses for longer increments of time, extending transitions through several breaths. This slow motion deep-dive cultivates endurance, coordination and facilitates a deeper integration with the core. We'll play with balance, and moving like molasses riding the waves of breath all while fiercely firing up the slow twitch muscles, cultivating a deeper sense of stability, strength and the power of slowing it down. This workshop will close with sweet, extended savasana.

Aerial Yoga
Dec 12, 2015 - Dec 12, 2015
9:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Class Description: Aerial yoga is a combination of traditional yoga poses done on the floor, and postures practiced using a soft fabric “trapeze” (called an aerial fabric hammock or sling) suspended above the floor. This is the same fabric that aerialists use in the circus, but in aerial yoga our body weight is distributed between the fabric and the floor, allowing us to access traditional yoga postures in new ways. This class involves a variety of workouts integrating components of aerial conditioning, Pilates, and yoga in the air and on the mat.
